The Image-Shaping Power of Liturgy: Two Case Studies from 9th-Century Rome

Abstract:

This paper will explore the interactions between important liturgical performances and their visual settings in 9th-century Rome. Centering on the presbytery mosaics of Santa Cecilia and Santa Maria in Domnica, it will strive to demonstrate how key liturgical rituals may have impacted the conception of monumental church decorations under Pope Paschal I (817–824).
