Around the Mediterranean in the Early Middle Ages: Frankish Hagiography and Relic Collections
The extent of movement, contact, and communication around the Mediterranean throughout the Early Middle Ages is an intensely debated topic for its range of implications, from the transformations of the ancient world to the emergence of new empires. How this transmediterranean movement shaped, affected, and responded to the cult of saints and the textual transmission of hagiography is at the core of the research presented here. This presentation outlines some provisional findings a new project on hagiography and the cult of saints in (c. 400 – c. 1000). Taking exchange between Syria and Francia as its starting point, the presentation explores three case studies: the Syriac saints in Frankish hagiographies; the Frankish visitors to Syriac sites and the importation of Syrian relics into Frankish territories; and the translation of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus into Latin with the assistance of a Syrian. Fundamentally, the presentation argues that the cult of saints and the associated hagiographical production should be understood in its transmediterranean context: a context that constantly shifted in response to political, economic, and social developments, which in turn had significant ramifications on the religious and textual lives of early medieval communities.
